EG ONE 2nd ENTRY

COORDINATING CONJUNTIONS

Hello there,

On today's entry i'll explain a very easy way to spot and learn the coordinating conjunctions, but first thing first we need to know:
What is a coordinating conjuction?

These are words that coordinate or join to main clauses which are of the same syntactic importance. Also known as coordinators, coordinating conjunctions are used to give equal emphasis to a pair of main clauses. To use these words you have to always remember the following tips.

Here is a technique you can use to learn them. It’s a good idea to use the mnemonic “FANBOYS” to memorize coordinating conjunctions so you’ll never forget them. They are:

Coordinating conjunctions always connect phrases, words, and clauses.
For example:
This batch of mushroom stew is savory and delicious.
As you could se on the latter example the conjunction AND is joining two main ideas.
It's necessary to warn that starting a sentence with a coordinating conjunction is incorrect. Mostly, this is because they are attempting to help prevent you from writing fragments rather than complete sentences; sometimes though, it’s just a personal preference. The fact is, you can begin sentences with coordinating conjunctions as long as you follow these three rules for doing so:
  • Ensure that the coordinating conjunction is immediately followed by a main clause
  • Don’t use coordinating conjunctions to begin all of your sentences. Do so only when it makes your writing more effective.
  • Although commas typically follow coordinating conjunctions used in areas other than the beginning of a sentence, they should not be used after coordinating conjunctions used to open sentences unless an interrupter immediately follows.
Now you'll find some other examples using the rest of coordinating conjuntions. In the following, the coordinating conjunctions have been bolded and italicized for you can spot them easily.
  • You can eat your cake with a spoon or fork.
  • My dog enjoys being bathed but hates getting his nails trimmed.
  • Bill refuses to eat peas, nor will he touch carrots.
  • I hate to waste a drop of gas, for it is very expensive these days.
The following link leads you practice website where you can improve your spotting skills, complete the exercises and please let me know if this information helped you www.khanacademy.org.
Was it useful for your learning?, if it wasn't help me to have myself improved.                                                                                                                     See ya, Next week.

  1. Hello Diego.
I like the content that you have shared with us because the topic about coordinating conjunctions is really important and useful also I liked the idea of FANBOYS to memorize them, this content has help me a lot because I used to get confused with coordinating conjunctions and subordinating conjunctions but now I already know the 7 seven coordinating conjunctions thanks to your post. Finally I just keep the doubt for knowing in what cases I have to use comma with coordinating conjunctions.

    Thank you...

  2. Hello Diego!!

I really enjoy reading your information. The diagram about "FANBOYS" is really useful to improve our learning about the coordinate conjucntions. It will help me to remember how to identify this kind of conjunctions.

But, just a little question. Do we need a comma o some puntuation extra to link two sentences using coordinating conjunctions?

  3. Hi Diego! What a nice post my dear friend, I loved the part where it says "first thing first"😂. Also I find very useful the FANBOYS idea so that I have in mind all of the coordinators in one word, thanks!

But I have a question, like you know the subordinating conjunctions have different types (time, place, manner, reason, etc.) my question is if the coordinating conjunctions have different types too?

  4. Hi Diego
I think the information about COORDINATING CONJUNTIONS that you shared with us is really significant and useful, because it shows to be a simple topic, but for me it isn´t because it relates many things, it was a little bit difficult to identify the seven Coordinating conjunctions FANBOYS but your post help me a lot, and also has help me to know that Coordinating conjunctions always connect phrases, words, and clauses. I don´t have doubts about the topic.
