EG ONE 8TH ENTRY
There's a "by" in my phrase!
Hello there, my friends!
On today's entry, i'll give a little feedback about what we been studying recently, that is the use of By- in a phrase, therefore is necessary to keep in mind that, "by" is more commonly used in passive sentences, also, remember that a passive clause permits the focus to be placed on the known information, at this point, i know that you might still be wondering, when do we use by?
Well, let me tell that i have found the answer on this website www.grammar-quizzes.com, which is pretty nice, because it has very specific examples that helped me to understand that we use by- in a phrase when we want to detail information or when is important to know who performs the action, e.g
An emergency call was received by the police late last night.
As you could see on the latter, the bolded fragment is specifying who performed the action of the verb, in this case the verb is " received" and the performer is the police
i really liked this website because it has a very explicit example of when to include by, and when is not necessary to include it in a sentence; you can check the chart on the link above, also there are some exercises in the website, so you can get into practice in order to improve your skills.
That's all for today guys...

Hello Diego
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, the webpage has different explicit examples and it helped me to see the uses of “By” in identifying and nonidentifying information. Reading the page, I realized that has “Reasons to Include / Not Include a By-phrase” I didn’t know some of them! Thanks for the resource 😄
But, I only have a question about this, what category of prepositions does “by” belong to?
Hi there, man!
ReplyDeleteI think this is a topic that brings ambiguity because when the passive is thaught yo think the by-phrase is needed always, but nope, we use it just when the "doer" of the action is important or relevant. Thanks for the information.
I only have one doubt: after "by" can a pronoun phrase be placed?
Hello DIego!, I realy liked your post, and your information is really clear!!
ReplyDeleteNow I noticed that using "by" help us to define the source of an action.
Also will help me to improve my learning to apply the rules of the "by" usage in context.
I just have a little bout, is there another word that could replace "by" ?
Thank you so much!
Hello Dieguito, first of all I liked the gif you used for your entries, and then the information is summarized, so is very clear and easy to understand what you are talking about. I learnedthat a -by phrase is needed when the object matters, and it's not always necessary.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your post, till next time. :)
Hi, Diego. What I liked from your post is that is really simple to understand and fun as always. I understood that by is used to specify in the passive voice sentences who did the action, which is not so important. Also, we delete by in the passive voice when the doer is not so important and the action has a meaning without the agent, for example when we have subjects like someone, a person, etc. I just have one question, can by be use also in active voice sentences? Thanks, bye.
